Bentonite is used to prepare drilling mud. When mixed with water, bentonite clay forms a viscous gel-like suspension, which serves as the basis of the drilling fluid. During the construction of wells, drilling fluid is pumped through the well to remove the cuttings, lubricate and cool the bit, and some other specific drilling goals.
