Directional drilling allows several wells to be drilled at varying angles from a central location or same platform. This dramatically decreases the amount of land surface area, land or offshore, required to develop an oilfield, making it possible to place the well in the least environmentally-sensitive location and still reach a reservoir that may be miles away laterally.
